What does speech therapy help with?

Speech therapy helps with problems in speaking, understanding language, voice and fluency. At Fairfield we see:

Children

  • Late talking — speech and language delay
  • Unclear speech — sounds said wrongly (articulation)
  • Autism (ASD) and ADHD — communication and social language
  • Stammering (stuttering)
  • Children with hearing loss — listening and speech training with hearing aids

Adults

  • Speech or language after a stroke — aphasia
  • Slurred or weak speech — dysarthria
  • Difficulty planning speech movements — apraxia
  • Voice problems — hoarse, strained or tired voice
  • Stammering in adults

How does speech therapy at Fairfield work?

Speech therapy at Fairfield starts with an assessment, followed by regular one-to-one sessions and practice at home.

1

Assessment

We talk with you, observe and test speech, language and — when needed — hearing, because hearing loss is a common hidden cause of speech delay.

2

A clear plan

You get simple goals, how often sessions are needed and what progress to expect.

3

Therapy sessions

Play-based sessions for children and practical, everyday exercises for adults.

4

Home programme

Parents and family members are shown what to practise at home between sessions — this is where most progress happens.

Why is a hearing test part of a speech assessment?

A hearing test is part of a speech assessment because a child who cannot hear speech clearly cannot learn to say it clearly. Our audiologists can test a child’s hearing at the same clinic, so nothing is missed. See hearing test.

When should my child see a speech therapist?

Your child should see a speech therapist if they are not saying any words by about 16–18 months, are not joining two words by 2 years, are hard for family to understand by 3 years, stammer for more than a few months, or if you are simply worried. Starting early usually means faster progress.
