1. What counts as severe or profound hearing loss?
Severe hearing loss means you cannot hear sounds softer than about 71–90 dB HL; profound loss means 91 dB HL or worse. In everyday terms, a person with severe loss usually misses normal conversation entirely without hearing aids, and a person with profound loss may hear only very loud sounds such as a horn or a door slamming.

This is the scale used by most clinics in India. The World Health Organization's 2021 grading uses slightly different cut-offs (for example, severe 65–80 dB and profound 80–95 dB in the better ear) [8]. Your audiogram report should say which scale was used.
Your audiogram is only the start. Two people with the same numbers can need very different hearing aids, because of their word-recognition score, the shape of the loss (flat or sloping), the size of the ear canal, and their dynamic range - the small gap between the softest sound they can hear and the loudest sound they can tolerate [2].
2. Which hearing aid is best for severe hearing loss?
No single hearing aid is best for everyone with severe loss; the right one is the one with enough power for your audiogram, fitted with the right earmold and verified in your ear. Once those three things are right, brand and technology level decide comfort in noise, connectivity and price.
Use this order when you compare options:
1. Fitting range first. The hearing aid must be able to reach your target amplification with headroom to spare as hearing changes.
2. Feedback control. At high volume, whistling is the most common complaint. Strong feedback cancellation and a well-sealed earmold matter.
3. Style: RIC with UP receiver or Power/Super Power BTE (see question 3).
4. Battery type: rechargeable or disposable (see question 8) - this also affects CGHS eligibility.
5. Connectivity: telecoil, Bluetooth, Auracast and remote-microphone support (see question 10).
6. Technology level and price. Higher tiers mostly add speech-in-noise features; core power is usually the same across tiers.
3. Should I choose a RIC or a Power BTE for severe hearing loss?
A RIC with an ultra-power receiver suits most severe loss; a Power or Super Power BTE is usually the safer choice for profound loss, for people who keep getting feedback on a RIC, and for people with ear-canal moisture or wax problems. A RIC is smaller and more discreet; a BTE has more power headroom and is more robust.

Many of our patients at the severe end try a RIC with an ultra-power receiver first because of its looks. If speech is still not clear, or feedback appears, moving to a Power BTE is a normal step, not a failure.
4. Which RIC hearing aids work for severe hearing loss, and what do they cost in India?
High-power RIC hearing aids for severe loss cost about ₹43,000 to ₹4,55,500 per ear in India, on the 2026 brand price lists we reviewed. All prices below are per ear (one hearing aid); a pair costs double.

Power and Super Power BTEs for severe-to-profound loss cost about ₹43,000 to ₹4,53,500 per ear in India on the price lists we reviewed. Four platforms dominate this category in 2026: ReSound Enzo IA, Signia Motion Charge&Go IX, Phonak Naída Lumity and Oticon Xceed, with Bernafon Leox as a long-standing option.

What is new in power BTEs since 2025?
ReSound Enzo IA (launched August 2025) - described as the world's smallest rechargeable Super Power BTE, with up to 28 hours per charge (20 hours with 50% streaming), Bluetooth LE Audio with Auracast, a telecoil, IP68 rating, and ReSound's four-microphone Clear Focus beamformer. ReSound reports a 2.7 dB signal-to-noise improvement over its previous model and 93% user preference in noise (manufacturer data) [2].
Signia Motion Charge&Go IX (launched September 2025) - three power classes (M, P, SP). The SP model gives up to 82 dB gain and 140 dB SPL output, and Signia quotes up to 73 hours per charge (65 hours with 5 hours of streaming). Telecoil included; Auracast needs a future firmware update (manufacturer data) [4].
Phonak Naída Lumity (launched August 2023) - still Phonak's power BTE. It runs on the previous-generation Lumity platform, not the newer Infinio platform with the DeepSonic chip. The ultra-power L-UP uses a size 675 battery and has a telecoil; the rechargeable L-PR is for mild to severe loss and has no telecoil [3].
Oticon Xceed (launched August 2019) - one of the most powerful hearing aids made (up to 146 dB SPL, 87 dB full-on gain), on Oticon's older Velox S platform. It uses disposable batteries [5].
6. Which hearing aids for severe loss actually use AI?
Only two products in this guide have a dedicated AI chip: Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio (DeepSonic) and ReSound Vivia (DNN chip) - and both are RICs, not power BTEs. Most power BTEs use AI-style machine-learning classifiers or AI features inside the phone app instead.

An honest caution: the independent HearAdvisor lab, which tests many popular hearing aids, has not tested any power hearing aid because its test set-up is designed for mild-to-moderate loss [2][4]. So for severe and profound loss, there is no independent lab ranking - only manufacturer data and user reports. Be wary of anyone claiming one power aid is "proven best".
7. What can I get at each budget for severe hearing loss?
Severe-loss hearing aids fall into three rough budget bands in India: under ₹80,000, ₹1,00,000–₹1,60,000, and ₹3,00,000 or more per ear. The core power is often similar across bands; what changes is performance in noise, connectivity and convenience.

This is a list of options, not a recommendation. A well-fitted mid-range device often helps more than a badly fitted premium one.
8. Rechargeable or battery hearing aid - which is better for severe loss?
Both work; rechargeable is more convenient, while size 675 batteries give the longest run time and can be swapped anywhere. Power aids drain batteries faster than ordinary aids, so this choice matters more at severe levels.

For CGHS beneficiaries, this is no longer only a comfort choice. From 9 September 2026, CGHS reimburses only digital, programmable and rechargeable hearing aids [9]. Disposable-battery ultra-power models such as Naída Lumity L-UP, Oticon Xceed and Bernafon Leox would not meet that specification.
9. Does CGHS pay for a hearing aid for severe hearing loss?
Yes. From 9 September 2026, CGHS reimburses the actual cost or ₹30,000 per ear, whichever is lower, and up to ₹60,000 for both ears when clinically justified. The limit includes GST, and the device must be rechargeable with a three-year warranty [9].
A power hearing aid costing more than ₹30,000 per ear is allowed - you pay the difference yourself. CGHS is a Central Government scheme; the full rules, documents and common reasons for rejection are covered in our separate CGHS guide.
10. Do I need a telecoil, Bluetooth or a remote microphone?
For severe and profound loss, a remote microphone often helps more than any premium hearing aid feature, because it sends the speaker's voice straight into your hearing aids. It cuts out distance and room noise, which hearing aid microphones alone cannot fully overcome.
Remote microphones: examples include Phonak Roger and ReSound Multi-Mic+. ReSound states the Multi-Mic+ adds about 6 dB signal-to-noise advantage and reaches about 25 metres (manufacturer data) [2]. Useful for meetings, classrooms, cars and family dinners.
Telecoil: connects to induction loops in some halls, places of worship and counters. Enzo IA, Signia Motion IX, Naída L-UP and Oticon Xceed have one; Naída L-PR does not [2][3][4][5].
Bluetooth and Auracast: phone calls and TV directly into both ears. Enzo IA supports Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast now; Signia Motion IX is "Auracast-ready" pending an update; Naída Lumity does not support Auracast [2][3][4].
TV streamers: a small box connected to the TV - often the single most-used accessory for power users at home.
11. Why does the earmold matter so much at this level of loss?
The earmold seals the ear so that the loud amplified sound does not leak out and get picked up again by the microphone - that leak is what causes whistling. A poorly fitting earmold can make even the most powerful hearing aid unusable.
Custom earmolds are made from an impression of your ear taken at the clinic.
Ears change shape with age and weight; earmolds may need remaking every few years, and much more often for children.
Whistling when you hug someone, wear a cap or chew usually means the seal or the settings need attention - tell your audiologist.
Tubes on BTE earmolds harden and need replacing, typically every few months.
12. Why does fitting matter more than the brand for severe hearing loss?
Because the margin for error is small: with severe loss, too little amplification means missed speech and too much means discomfort or feedback. People with power hearing aids often have a reduced dynamic range, so the audiologist must place speech carefully inside a narrow window [2].
Real-ear measurement (REM) checks, with a thin probe tube in your ear, what the hearing aid actually delivers. It is the only way to confirm that you are getting the prescribed amplification.
Frequency lowering (moving high-pitched sounds to lower pitches you can still hear) can help sloping severe losses, but must be set and checked carefully.
Gradual adjustment - several follow-up visits are normal. One user of a profound-loss aid wrote that it "might take several visits to get things right" (user report) [5].
Speech and listening training helps the brain re-learn sounds, especially after years of untreated loss.

13. What are the common problems with power hearing aids?
The most common complaints are trouble in crowded noisy places, whistling, moisture damage, size, and app or connection issues. Power hearing aids have improved, but they have not removed these problems.

On the positive side, several long-term users report devices lasting six years or more without repair (user reports) [5]. Regular cleaning, a drying box in humid Indian summers and monsoon, and timely tube changes reduce many problems.
14. When is a cochlear implant better than a hearing aid?
A cochlear implant is considered when even well-fitted power hearing aids do not give useful speech understanding - typically in severe-to-profound loss with poor word recognition, provided the hearing nerve is intact [10]. A hearing aid makes sound louder; an implant stimulates the hearing nerve directly with electrical signals.
Signs to ask about an implant: you hear voices but cannot make out words even with properly verified hearing aids; your word-recognition score is low; you rely heavily on lip-reading.
Bimodal fitting: many people use an implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other. ReSound offers Enzo IA Bimodal and Sensia Bimodal, designed to work with Cochlear Nucleus sound processors (manufacturer).
Children: for children born with severe-to-profound loss, early implantation matters for speech and language development [10]. The Government's ADIP scheme funds cochlear implant surgery for eligible children at empanelled hospitals; check current eligibility on the official ADIP portals [11].
Decision: candidacy is decided by an ENT surgeon and implant audiologist after detailed tests, not by a hearing aid seller.
15. How should I buy a hearing aid for severe loss in India?
Get an ENT check and full audiological test first, then trial the shortlisted hearing aids with custom earmolds and verification before you pay. Compare the total package - service, earmold remakes, warranty and follow-up - not only the price.
Make sure the audiologist is registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).
Ask whether real-ear measurement will be done, and ask to see the result.
Ask for prices per ear in writing, and what is included: earmolds, charger, follow-ups, cleaning, warranty length.
Hearing aids themselves attract nil GST in India; check that the invoice is correct.
Plan for after-care: power aids need cleaning, tube changes and re-tuning over the years.
16. What else do patients ask about hearing aids for severe hearing loss?
What is the best hearing aid for severe hearing loss?
There is no single best hearing aid. For severe loss (71–90 dB HL), a high-power RIC with an ultra-power receiver and custom earmold often works; for profound loss (91 dB HL and above), a Power or Super Power BTE such as ReSound Enzo IA, Signia Motion Charge&Go SP IX, Phonak Naída Lumity UP or Oticon Xceed is usually considered. The right choice depends on the audiogram, ear shape and a verified fitting.
Can a RIC hearing aid work for severe hearing loss?
Yes. RIC hearing aids with an ultra-power receiver can fit up to about 105–115 dB HL depending on the brand, which covers most severe loss. They are more prone to whistling at very high volume than a Power BTE, so a well-sealed custom earmold is important.
How much does a hearing aid for severe hearing loss cost in India?
On the 2026 brand price lists we reviewed, hearing aids suitable for severe loss cost from about ₹43,000 to ₹4,55,500 per ear. A pair costs about double. Entry power BTEs start around ₹43,000–₹52,000 per ear.
What is the difference between a Power and a Super Power BTE?
Both are behind-the-ear hearing aids built for high amplification. A Super Power or Ultra Power model gives more gain and output, often fitting up to about 120 dB HL, and is intended for severe-to-profound loss; a Power model covers mainly severe loss.
Which power hearing aids use AI?
Among power BTEs, none in this guide has a separate AI chip. For severe and profound hearing loss, choose power first, earmold second and technology level third - and insist on a verified fitting. India now has more choice than ever, from rechargeable super power BTEs to AI-chip RICs, at prices from about ₹43,000 to ₹4,55,500 per ear.
If hearing aids no longer give clear speech even after careful fitting, ask about a cochlear implant early rather than late.
