## 1. The problem nobody had solved: your hearing aid cannot read your mind

Sit in any busy Delhi restaurant on a Saturday evening. There is your family at the table. There is a loud group behind you. There are waiters, plates, a television in the corner and film music somewhere overhead.

A modern premium hearing aid with a deep neural network will do something clever here. It will identify which sounds are speech and which are noise, and it will push the speech forward. That is real technology and it works. But it creates a new problem, and it is a strange one: **the hearing aid does not know which speech you care about**. If the loudest, cleanest voice in the room belongs to a stranger behind you, that is often the voice the hearing aid will lift.

HearingTracker's editor-in-chief Karl Strom put it plainly when he reported on the Sensia launch: today's deep neural networks provide impressive speech-in-noise enhancement, "but they are not mind-readers" [2]. GN Hearing built Sensia specifically around that gap.

Two small details worth noticing. First, Sensia was announced *before* the other two major flagship launches of 2026 - Phonak's Audéo EON Sphere and Signia's Pure Charge&Go MaX both arrived on 24 August. Second, ReSound has a dedicated India website, so an Indian launch is a reasonable expectation, but until GN publishes it, any date or price you see quoted online is guesswork [1][9].

## 3. Intelligent All-Around: three technologies in one automatic programme

GN's name for Sensia's complete automatic programme is **Intelligent All-Around**. It is not a single feature. It is three technologies designed to work as one [1][2]:

### (a) AcoustIQ - the conductor

AcoustIQ is the system that listens to your surroundings, works out what kind of place you are in, and then decides which features to switch on. GN's Head of Product and Partner Marketing, Katie Ogden, described classification as the hearing aid's "unsung hero" and "the conductor of everything" [2].

This is an important distinction. Ogden explained that AcoustIQ "is not just classification. It's also the part that comes afterward, which is engaging the features" [2]. A brilliant noise-reduction system is worthless if the hearing aid never realises it should turn it on.

### (b) A binaural four-microphone beamformer - the aim

Both hearing aids talk to each other and combine four microphones into a single beam pointed forward - in the direction your head is facing. Speech coming from in front of you is given priority. Lower-frequency sound from outside the beam is deliberately preserved so you keep a sense of the room around you [1][2].

### (c) DNN denoising - the cleaning

A deep neural network trained on speech then reduces competing voices and other distractions around the person you are listening to, so their voice stands out more clearly [1][2].

**Why the combination matters**
A DNN on its own can separate speech from noise, but in a room with several talkers it may favour the most prominent voice - even if that person is at another table. The beamformer tells the DNN where to point. That pairing is the core of Sensia's design [2].

## 4. The big idea: "where you look, that's where you want to hear"

Sensia's design rests on a very human observation. When you want to hear somebody, you turn towards them and look at them. You do it without thinking. You have done it your whole life.

Sophie Hanson, GN Hearing's Senior Director of Product Marketing and Brand, described the approach as relying on that natural cue: "It's about essentially supporting human intention… Where you look, that's where you want to hear" [2].

So Sensia does not attempt to guess your intention from the sound alone. It uses your own head position as the instruction. This is worth being clear about, because it is easy to misread the marketing: **Sensia does not track your eyes**. There is no camera and no eye sensor. What it follows is the direction your head is facing, which in normal conversation is the same thing.

It also means the technology carries a condition. To get the strongest frontal help, **you have to face the person you want to hear**. If you are in the front seat of a car speaking to somebody behind you, or seated at a long dinner table beside the person talking, the forward beam is not pointing at them. That is an honest trade-off rather than a flaw, but you should know about it before you buy.

## 5. How Sensia behaves through a normal day

Sensia's automatic programme moves between three strategies depending on what AcoustIQ hears [2].

### Why it deliberately takes its time

Here is a detail that most product pages will never tell you, and it explains a lot about how Sensia feels to wear. AcoustIQ samples the acoustic environment roughly **every 1.5 milliseconds** and consolidates that information every **three to four seconds** - but it will not jump into its strongest mode on the strength of a moment's noise. Katie Ogden said it can take **about a minute** before Sensia enters Speech Intelligibility mode and automatically engages DNN denoising [2].

GN's reasoning is that constant switching between processing modes is unpleasant. A hearing aid that keeps changing character every few seconds as a door opens or a bus passes feels unstable and tiring. By waiting for a consistent pattern of conversation, Sensia aims to feel steady.

The practical consequence: if you walk into a noisy restaurant, the strongest help is not instant. Give it a minute. For many wearers that is a fair exchange for stability - but it is a real characteristic of the device and you should test it during a trial.

## 6. Two kinds of noise reduction - and the honest problem of "hallucinations"

This section is one of the more technically interesting parts of the Sensia story, and it is unusually candid for a manufacturer.

A deep neural network trained on speech is excellent when there is speech to work with. But what happens when the noise is a vacuum cleaner, a ceiling fan, or an air conditioner and nobody is talking? A speech-trained network has very little useful information, and it can start inventing artefacts.

GN's Chief Audiology Officer, Laurel Christensen, PhD, referred to these unwanted artefacts as DNN **"hallucinations"** [2] - the same word the technology world uses when a language model confidently makes something up.

Sensia's answer is to keep two different noise-reduction systems and let the automatic programme choose between them: the DNN for difficult situations where there is speech to preserve, and ReSound's established **Noise Tracker II** for environments dominated by non-speech noise [2].

Christensen summarised it: "We need to apply the legacy noise reduction when there isn't speech, and the deep neural network when there is. Integrating all these things is a harder job than people really understand" [2].

## 7. Why Sensia refuses to recognise music - on purpose

Most premium hearing aids advertise automatic music detection as a feature. Sensia deliberately leaves it out of its automatic programme, and GN's explanation is genuinely thoughtful [2].

Imagine you are at a live music evening. Do you want to hear the band, or the friend sitting across the table? The hearing aid has no way of knowing. As GN's Chief Technology Officer Brian Dam Pedersen put it: "Hearing aids can't read minds" [2].

So Sensia makes a decision and tells you what it is: in the automatic programme it prioritises speech. If you want to focus on music, you select a dedicated music programme yourself. GN also acknowledges that mixed situations - singing while being given instructions, for example - remain difficult and may still need manual intervention [2].

**A useful comparison point**
GN reported that in its own testing, some competing premium devices classified speech-in-noise scenes that had background music as "music" environments and therefore failed to switch on speech-focused processing. One competing device reportedly classified vacuum-cleaner noise as music [2]. Since this testing was commissioned by GN and the competing brands are not named, treat it as GN's account rather than as independent evidence.

Sensia is not one hearing aid. It is a family, and what you actually receive depends on both the style and the technology level you choose. This is where many buyers get confused, so here it is plainly [1][2].

Adding automatic DNN denoising costs power. A deep neural network running continuously consumes considerably more energy than conventional processing, so the interesting question was whether Sensia would lose battery life compared with Vivia. According to GN, it does not [1][2].

For Indian conditions, the IP68 rating and internal nanocoating are more than marketing. Delhi summers, monsoon humidity and perspiration are among the most common reasons hearing aids come back to our clinic for repair. A device that resists moisture is a device that spends more time in your ear and less time in a service centre.

## 10. Auracast: "fully functional, not merely ready"

Auracast is the Bluetooth broadcasting standard that lets a public venue - an airport, a cinema, an auditorium, a place of worship - transmit sound directly to hearing aids. Many manufacturers describe their products as "Auracast ready", which sometimes means the feature will arrive in a later firmware update.

GN Hearing's Lead Research Scientist, Miguel Angel Aranda de Toro, PhD, was pointed about this at the launch: "I prefer to say we have Auracast fully functional now. It's working" [2].

GN demonstrated it at the Royal Danish Playhouse in Copenhagen, which had just been fitted with an Auracast broadcasting system. Attendees could select broadcasts through the ReSound Smart 3D app and switch between direct theatrical sound, enhanced dialogue, and a separate audio-description channel intended for blind and low-vision audience members [2].

### What the research says about Auracast versus a hearing loop

- In a GN user study comparing Auracast with a traditional hearing loop, participants rated Auracast **8 out of 10** on average against **6 out of 10** for the loop, describing the Auracast signal as fuller, clearer and more detailed - especially for music and male voices [2].

- Research cited by ReSound from the Bluetooth SIG (2025) reported that Auracast was preferred **87%** of the time compared with a teleloop [1].

- Aranda de Toro does not expect Auracast to replace hearing loops immediately, but points to stereo sound, greater bandwidth, simpler installation, selectable channels and broader coverage as advantages [2].

- At least one RIE model of Sensia also includes a **telecoil**, so wearers are not forced to abandon existing loop systems [2].

**An honest note for Indian buyers**
Auracast is a genuine advance, but it only helps where a venue has installed a transmitter. In India that infrastructure is still very limited. Treat Auracast as valuable future-proofing rather than a benefit you will use next week - and if a salesperson presents it as an everyday feature, ask them where you will actually find it.

- Development drew on anonymised usage data from more than **250,000 connected ReSound users**, which showed GN when Vivia wearers were manually selecting the hearing-in-noise programme and helped set Sensia's automatic thresholds [2].

That last point deserves a moment. Sensia's automatic switching thresholds were not chosen in a laboratory alone; they were informed by observing when a quarter of a million real wearers reached for extra help. Whether you find that reassuring or uncomfortable is a fair personal question, and one worth asking your audiologist about data privacy.

## 12. The evidence - what has actually been measured

This is where an informed buyer separates themselves from a persuaded one. Below are the published performance claims, who produced them, and - importantly - what they do and do not demonstrate.

**The caveat that matters most**
HearingTracker made a point that every reader should carry with them. In the frontal-talker studies, the measured outcome was **which talker was most audible** - not a conventional speech-recognition score showing how many extra words a wearer actually understood [2].
Those are different things. "More audible" supports GN's argument that the hearing aid is focusing on the intended speaker. It does not by itself tell you how much better you will understand a conversation. And at the time of writing, HearingTracker's independent partner laboratory **HearAdvisor had not yet published formal testing of Sensia** [2].

## 13. Real innovation, or the same chip with a new name?

This is the question readers ask us most often about any new launch, and Sensia is an unusually clear case - because GN itself has answered both sides of it publicly. We will set out both, and leave the conclusion to you.

### The case that Sensia is largely a refinement

- GN states plainly that **Sensia uses the same chips and essentially the same DNN as ReSound Vivia**, the platform introduced in early 2025 [2].

- No new processing hardware was required. Vivia already carried a dedicated DNN processor.

- Because the hardware is shared, an obvious question arose at the launch: why not simply give existing Vivia owners a firmware update, as Phonak recently did when it allowed Infinio users to update to Infinio Ultra? GN **chose not to** extend Sensia's new core processing and steering to Vivia [2].

- GN acknowledged a **commercial consideration** in that decision - the company believes the cumulative changes are substantial enough to justify positioning Sensia as a brand new product family [2].

- Battery life, physical size and charging arrangements are broadly unchanged from Vivia [2].

### The case that Sensia is a genuine advance

- Chief Audiology Officer Laurel Christensen was direct: **"It's all new steering. It's not the same steering that Vivia has"** [2]. The classification thresholds, the decision logic and the coordination between the beamformer, the DNN and Noise Tracker II were reworked throughout the automatic programme.

- On Vivia, the strongest DNN noise reduction **had to be selected manually**. On Sensia 9 it engages by itself. CTO Brian Dam Pedersen called that automation the most important technical change: "they don't have to think about the hearing aid in order to get the full benefit" [2].

- Making DNN denoising automatic created real engineering problems - the device must judge not only when stronger processing is warranted, but **where the relevant speech is coming from**, while managing the DNN's higher power draw so that all-day battery life survives [2].

- Lower activation thresholds bring the Better Ear and Speech Intelligibility modes into use more often, informed by real-world data from 250,000 wearers [2].

- The launch also brings genuinely new elements beyond signal processing: the bimodal cochlear-implant options, Smart Fit 2.4, the NAL-NL3 prescription, an updated charger, and fully working Auracast [2].

**How to think about it**
Dam Pedersen made a broader observation that applies to the whole industry, not just to GN: manufacturers increasingly build several product generations on the same chipset, because software now carries more of the performance. He also noted that in some markets, regulatory requirements can oblige a device with substantially expanded functionality to be separately named, labelled and maintained as a different product code [2].
**So the honest framing is this. The hardware is not new. The behaviour is different. Whether that difference is worth a new purchase depends entirely on whether the automation solves a problem you personally have - and only a trial in your own noisy rooms can tell you that. We are not going to answer it for you.**

2026 has been an unusual year. Three of the world's largest hearing aid groups launched flagship platforms within a fortnight of each other, and all three built them around artificial intelligence for speech in noise. Below is a factual comparison of published information only.

### What the three approaches really tell you

Strip away the branding and you are looking at three different beliefs about what a hearing aid should do in a noisy room.

- **ReSound Sensia** is betting that the missing ingredient is *intention* - knowing which voice you want. Its answer is your head direction.

- **Phonak Audéo EON Sphere** is betting on *raw separation power* - a dedicated chip doing one job as well as possible.

- **Signia Pure Charge&Go MaX** is betting on *breadth* - several networks managing the whole scene, including how your own voice sounds to you.

None of these is the obviously correct philosophy. They suit different people. A person who mostly struggles in face-to-face restaurant conversation, a person who works in constant machinery noise, and a person who is troubled by the sound of their own voice will each be served differently. **That is precisely why we are not giving a verdict - and why a supervised trial matters more than any article, including this one.**

## 15. India: what we know today

We will be direct, because there is a great deal of speculation online.

- **No Indian price has been published** by GN Hearing. Any figure you see quoted today is an estimate, not an official price.

- ReSound maintains a dedicated India website, and GN has historically brought its premium platforms to India, so an Indian launch is a reasonable expectation - but a date is not the same as an expectation [1].

- ReSound Vivia, the previous platform on the same chipset, is already available through Indian channels, and shares much of Sensia's hardware. For some buyers that is a sensible thing to trial in the meantime.

If Sensia matters to you, the practical step is to register your interest with a clinic that carries ReSound so you are told when Indian availability and pricing are confirmed, rather than relying on forums and resellers.

Whichever brand you are considering, these questions protect you. Take this list with you.

In India, the service package often matters more to long-term satisfaction than the model

Has this device been verified on my ears with real-ear measurement?
Prescription fitting formulas such as NAL-NL3 only help if the output is verified in your ear canal

What is the return and exchange policy in writing?
Never rely on a verbal assurance

## 17. The bottom line

ReSound Sensia's most interesting contribution is not a bigger neural network. It is a change of question. Instead of asking how much noise a hearing aid can remove, GN has asked how a hearing aid can work out *which voice you actually want* - and answered it with the oldest human cue there is: you look at people when you want to hear them.

The engineering around that idea is real. Scene classification that also decides which features to engage, a beamformer and a neural network cooperating rather than competing, two noise-reduction systems chosen according to whether speech is present, and a deliberate refusal to guess about music - these are considered design decisions, and GN has been unusually open about the trade-offs they involve.

The limits are equally real. The hardware is shared with the previous generation. The strongest features belong to one level and one style. The published evidence is largely manufacturer-generated and measured audibility rather than word understanding. Independent testing has not yet been published. India has no launch date or price.

Both of those paragraphs are true at the same time, and neither cancels the other. **Our job is to give you the verified information; the decision about which hearing aid is right for you is yours to make, with your audiologist, on your own ears.**

                                        Does ReSound Sensia actually track my eyes?

                                        No. There is no camera and no eye sensor. Sensia uses a four-microphone beam aimed in the direction your head is facing, on the reasonable assumption that you turn towards the person you want to hear.                                         What is the real difference between ReSound Sensia and ReSound Vivia?

                                        GN states that Sensia uses the same chips and essentially the same neural network as Vivia. The difference is automation and control logic. On Vivia, the strongest DNN noise reduction had to be selected manually through a dedicated hearing-in-noise programme. The system samples the environment roughly every 1.5 milliseconds and consolidates information every three to four seconds, but waits for a consistent pattern of conversation.                                         We do not offer a verdict, and we would be cautious about anyone who does at this stage. All three launched within weeks of each other in 2026, all three use artificial intelligence for speech in noise, and independent laboratory testing of all three was still pending. They follow different design philosophies that suit different listeners. GN's reasoning is that the hearing aid cannot know whether a wearer at a live music venue wants to hear the band or the person opposite them.
